Used primarily as an antibiotic in the treatment of bacterial infections, especially those caused by anaerobic bacteria and certain Gram-positive organisms. Commonly formulated in topical and oral preparations for the management of moderate to severe acne vulgaris due to its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Also employed in patients allergic to penicillin for the treatment of respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and bone/joint infections. Its palmitate ester form improves taste and is often used in pediatric oral suspensions, where it is hydrolyzed in the body to release active clindamycin. Effective against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in some cases, making it valuable in community-acquired infections.
