Used in the treatment of severe eosinophilic asthma, this antibody targets interleukin-5 (IL-5), a key cytokine involved in the growth, activation, and survival of eosinophils. By blocking IL-5 from binding to its receptor on eosinophils, it significantly reduces eosinophil levels in the blood and lung tissue. This leads to decreased airway inflammation, fewer asthma exacerbations, and reduced reliance on oral corticosteroids. It is particularly effective in patients with eosinophil-driven asthma phenotypes. The antibody is also being studied in other eosinophil-associated conditions such as chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis, and hypereosinophilic syndrome.
