It is effective in both adults and children, including cases where the parasite is resistant to chloroquine. Lumefantrine works by accumulating in the parasite's food vacuole and interfering with heme detoxification, leading to parasite death. The drug is particularly valuable in regions with high rates of drug-resistant malaria and is part of artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs), which are recommended by the WHO as first-line treatments. It is administered orally, usually in a six-dose regimen over three days, and has improved efficacy when taken with fatty foods due to enhanced absorption.
