Used as a strong base in organic synthesis, particularly in the production of biodiesel through transesterification of fats and oils. It promotes the conversion of triglycerides into fatty acid ethyl esters. Also employed in the pharmaceutical industry for ethylation reactions and in the manufacture of dyes, perfumes, and other fine chemicals where a strong ethoxide base is required. Due to its reactivity with moisture and air, it is handled under anhydrous conditions.
