Used as a key building block in the synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), particularly for constructing porous materials with high thermal and chemical stability. Its rigid terphenyl backbone and multiple carboxylic acid groups enable strong coordination with metal ions, facilitating the formation of extended network structures. These MOFs are explored for applications in gas storage, selective gas separation (such as CO₂/N₂ or CH₄/H₂), and catalysis due to their tunable pore environments. The methyl and carboxylic acid substituents enhance structural diversity and functionality, allowing post-synthetic modification or improved host-guest interactions. Also investigated for use in sensors and optoelectronic materials owing to its aromatic conjugation and structural rigidity.
