Eltrombopag is a thrombopoietin receptor agonist primarily used to treat thrombocytopenia in adults and children with chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) who have had an insufficient response to corticosteroids, immunoglobulins, or splenectomy. It is also indicated for thrombocytopenia in patients with chronic hepatitis C infection to enable the initiation and/or maintenance of interferon-based therapy. Additionally, Eltrombopag is used to treat severe aplastic anemia in patients who have had an insufficient response to immunosuppressive therapy. It works by mimicking the action of thrombopoietin, activating the thrombopoietin receptor on megakaryocytes and platelets to stimulate the production of platelets and other hematopoietic cells in the bone marrow.
