Used as a key building block in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), this tetracarboxylic acid links metal ions or clusters to form porous, crystalline materials. Its rigid terphenyl backbone and four carboxylic acid groups enable the construction of highly ordered 2D or 3D network structures with large surface areas. These MOFs are applied in gas storage, such as hydrogen or carbon dioxide capture, due to their tunable pore sizes and strong binding sites.
