description Product Description
Used as a culture medium in microbiology to detect amylase-producing microorganisms. When microorganisms are grown on this medium, those producing amylase enzymes break down the soluble starch around their colonies. After incubation, iodine solution is added, which reacts with starch to form a blue-black color. Clear zones around colonies indicate starch hydrolysis, helping identify and differentiate species such as Bacillus and Streptomyces. Commonly used in environmental, food, and clinical labs for microbial characterization.
