Used primarily in the production of felt hats, where it hardens animal fur during the felting process. This application has declined significantly due to health and environmental concerns. Also employed in some chemical synthesis processes as a catalyst or reagent, particularly in mercury-based reactions and as a nitrating agent. Its use is highly restricted today because of the toxicity of mercury and the risk of environmental contamination.
