Used in the management of acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), reteplase is a thrombolytic agent that helps dissolve blood clots in coronary arteries. It works by activating plasminogen to form plasmin, an enzyme that breaks down fibrin, the structural component of blood clots. Administered intravenously, reteplase restores blood flow to the heart muscle quickly, reducing damage and improving survival rates. It is typically used when immediate percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is not available. Reteplase offers a simpler dosing regimen compared to some other thrombolytics, often given as two bolus injections 30 minutes apart, making it practical in emergency settings.
