Used primarily as an initiator in polymerization reactions, especially in the production of synthetic rubbers and plastics. It decomposes at elevated temperatures to generate free radicals, which kickstart the chain reaction needed to form long polymer chains. Commonly applied in the curing of unsaturated polyester resins and in the manufacturing of polyethylene by high-pressure processes. Its effectiveness at high temperatures makes it suitable for industrial-scale operations where thermal initiation is required.
