Used primarily as a radical initiator in polymer chemistry, especially in the production of acrylic and methacrylic polymers. It decomposes upon heating to generate free radicals that initiate chain polymerization. Commonly employed in emulsion, suspension, and solution polymerization processes due to its solubility in organic solvents and low odor. Preferred in systems where low-temperature initiation is required, as it decomposes effectively at moderate temperatures. Also used in the synthesis of specialty polymers where colorless or neutral decomposition byproducts are important, as it yields volatile, non-reactive fragments that do not discolor the final product.
