Used in the synthesis of hydrophilic and biocompatible polymers, particularly in biomedical applications such as contact lenses, wound dressings, and drug delivery systems. Its zwitterionic nature provides excellent resistance to protein fouling and enhances material compatibility with biological tissues. Commonly copolymerized with other acrylic or methacrylic monomers to improve hydration, lubricity, and antimicrobial surfaces. Also applied in coatings for medical devices to reduce thrombogenicity and bacterial adhesion.
