It functions as a glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitor, preventing platelet aggregation and reducing the risk of thrombotic events. This makes it particularly valuable in preventing blood clots during percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI), such as angioplasty and stent placement. By inhibiting the final common pathway of platelet aggregation, tirofiban helps maintain blood flow in coronary arteries, minimizing the risk of further ischemic complications.
