Domperidone is primarily used as an antiemetic and gastroprokinetic agent. It is effective in treating nausea and vomiting, particularly in cases related to chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or gastrointestinal disorders. By blocking dopamine receptors in the gut, it enhances gastrointestinal motility, making it useful for managing symptoms of gastroparesis, such as bloating, heartburn, and early satiety. Additionally, it is often prescribed to lactating women to stimulate milk production by increasing prolactin levels. However, it is not recommended for central nausea due to its limited ability to cross the blood-brain barrier. Its peripheral action minimizes the risk of extrapyramidal side effects compared to other dopamine antagonists.
