Used primarily in the synthesis of triphenylmethyl (trityl) protecting groups in organic chemistry, especially in nucleotide and carbohydrate chemistry where selective protection of functional groups is required. Its ability to form stable carbocations makes it valuable in studying reaction mechanisms and in the preparation of dyes and color-changing compounds. Also employed in the production of photochemicals and as an intermediate in the manufacture of certain pharmaceuticals and triarylmethane dyes. Due to its intense color upon protonation or oxidation, it finds use in indicators and sensory materials.
