Used primarily as an anticonvulsant, particularly in the treatment of absence seizures (petit mal epilepsy). It helps control seizure activity by stabilizing electrical activity in the brain. Though effective, its use has declined due to the risk of serious side effects and the availability of newer, safer antiepileptic drugs. It may still be considered in specific cases where other treatments are ineffective. Also known to cross the placenta, so use during pregnancy is approached with caution. Requires careful monitoring through regular blood tests to maintain therapeutic levels and minimize toxicity.
