Suprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) primarily used for its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic properties. It was historically used in ophthalmic formulations to manage postoperative inflammation and pain following cataract surgery and other ocular procedures. Its topical application helps reduce swelling, discomfort, and the risk of complications by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis in eye tissues. Suprofen has also been investigated for its potential in mitigating miosis during surgery by preventing prostaglandin-mediated constriction of the iris. Although systemic use was explored, concerns over renal and gastrointestinal side effects limited its broader application, leading to a focus on localized ocular treatment. Its use has declined in recent years due to the availability of newer, safer NSAIDs with improved profiles.
