Used in the treatment of HIV infection as part of antiretroviral therapy. It works by inhibiting the reverse transcriptase enzyme, preventing the virus from replicating in human cells. Mainly used in resource-limited settings due to low cost, but has been largely replaced by safer alternatives because of significant side effects such as peripheral neuropathy and lipodystrophy. Often included in fixed-dose combination tablets for simplified dosing.
