Used primarily to prevent relapse of malaria caused by Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium ovale. It targets the dormant liver stages (hypnozoites) of these parasites, making it essential for radical cure. Also used in some cases to reduce transmission of Plasmodium falciparum by acting on gametocytes. Requires testing for G6PD deficiency before use due to risk of hemolytic anemia.
