Used in the treatment of bacterial infections, particularly those caused by susceptible gram-negative and some gram-positive organisms. It is effective in respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and certain types of gastrointestinal infections. As a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, it works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, thereby preventing DNA replication and transcription. Its oral and intravenous formulations allow flexibility in treatment settings, including outpatient and hospital care.
