Used primarily to treat myasthenia gravis by enhancing muscle strength through inhibition of acetylcholinesterase, leading to increased acetylcholine levels at neuromuscular junctions. Commonly administered in postoperative settings to reverse the effects of non-depolarizing muscle relaxants. Also utilized in the management of paralytic ileus and urinary retention due to its ability to stimulate smooth muscle activity in the gastrointestinal and urinary tracts. Occasionally used in the diagnosis of cholinesterase deficiency.
