Used topically to prevent and treat bacterial infections in burn wounds. It is especially effective against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a common and dangerous pathogen in burn patients. Mafenide acetate penetrates eschar effectively, allowing it to reach infected tissue beneath. It is often used in combination with wound debridement and other supportive treatments in severe burn care. Its use may be limited by pain upon application and risk of metabolic acidosis due to carbonic anhydrase inhibition.
