description Product Description
Imiquimod is primarily used as a topical immune response modifier in the treatment of various skin conditions. It is commonly prescribed for the management of external genital warts caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). By stimulating the body's immune system, it helps increase the production of cytokines such as interferon-alpha, enhancing local antiviral and antitumor activity.
It is also used in the treatment of actinic keratosis, a precancerous skin condition caused by prolonged sun exposure. In this case, imiquimod helps destroy abnormal skin cells and prevent their progression to squamous cell carcinoma.
Additionally, imiquimod is approved for the treatment of superficial basal cell carcinoma, especially when surgery is not suitable. It works by promoting an immune-mediated destruction of cancer cells, offering a non-invasive therapeutic option.
Due to its immune-stimulating properties, imiquimod has been investigated off-label for other dermatological conditions, including certain viral skin infections and some types of skin lymphoma.
