It is commonly prescribed in topical formulations such as creams and ointments for skin infections like impetigo, infected eczema, and minor cuts or wounds. Oral formulations are used for more systemic infections, including bone and joint infections, respiratory tract infections, and in combination therapy for prosthetic device infections. Due to its unique mechanism of action— inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis by blocking elongation factor G—it is often reserved for specific cases to prevent resistance development. It is also used in ophthalmic preparations for bacterial eye infections.
