Used primarily in oral contraceptive formulations due to its progestogenic activity. It prevents ovulation by suppressing gonadotropin hormones and alters the cervical mucus and endometrium to inhibit sperm penetration and implantation. Often combined with an estrogen such as ethinyl estradiol in birth control pills. Also investigated for use in hormone replacement therapy and management of menstrual disorders.
