Used primarily in the treatment of gastrointestinal motility disorders, especially gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and chronic constipation. It works by enhancing the release of acetylcholine in the enteric nervous system, which increases the movement of the upper gastrointestinal tract. This action helps speed up gastric emptying and improves esophageal and intestinal motility. Was also used in patients with irritable bowel syndrome where delayed transit is a concern. Due to risk of cardiac arrhythmias, its use has been restricted or discontinued in many countries, but it may still be available in limited settings under strict medical supervision.
