Used primarily as an antibiotic in the treatment of bacterial infections, especially those caused by anaerobic bacteria and certain Gram-positive organisms. Commonly formulated in topical preparations for the treatment of acne vulgaris due to its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Also used in oral and intravenous forms for more systemic infections, including respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and intra-abdominal infections. Its palmitate ester form improves solubility and absorption in pediatric formulations, making it suitable for use in children. Frequently prescribed when patients are allergic to penicillin.
