Used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, skin infections, urinary tract infections, and intra-abdominal infections. Particularly effective against anaerobic bacteria and commonly used in surgical prophylaxis to prevent infections during and after procedures, especially those involving the gastrointestinal tract. Often chosen when there is a risk of beta-lactamase-producing organisms, as it is resistant to many of these enzymes. Also used in combination therapy for infections caused by susceptible Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria.
