Aristolochic acid has been historically used in traditional medicine for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, particularly in herbal remedies for arthritis, gout, and respiratory conditions. It was also employed to aid wound healing and as a component in weight-loss supplements. However, due to its strong association with kidney damage and upper urinary tract cancers, its use in medicinal products has been banned or severely restricted in many countries. Despite the health risks, it has occasionally been found as an adulterant in some herbal formulations. Its application in modern medicine is virtually nonexistent due to toxicity concerns.
