Used to treat HIV-1 infection as part of antiretroviral therapy. It works by inhibiting the HIV protease enzyme, preventing the virus from maturing and producing new infectious particles. Often prescribed in combination with other antiretroviral drugs to reduce viral load and improve immune function. May be boosted with low-dose ritonavir or cobicistat to enhance its effectiveness. Not a cure for HIV, but helps manage the disease and delay progression to AIDS.
