Tyrothricin is primarily used as a topical antibiotic due to its potent activity against a broad range of Gram-positive bacteria and some Gram-negative bacteria. It is commonly formulated in ointments, throat lozenges, and antiseptic sprays to treat infections of the skin, mouth, and upper respiratory tract. Because of its toxicity when administered systemically, it is not used for internal or injectable treatments. Its fast-acting bactericidal properties, achieved by disrupting bacterial cell membranes, make it effective in preventing infection in minor cuts, burns, and abrasions. Tyrothricin is also used in veterinary medicine for similar topical applications. Additionally, it has been employed in research settings to study membrane disruption in bacterial cells due to its ability to form ion channels and dissolve lipid bilayers.
