Diclofenamide is primarily used in the treatment of glaucoma, a condition characterized by increased pressure within the eye that can lead to vision loss. It works by reducing the production of aqueous humor, the fluid inside the eye, thereby lowering intraocular pressure. This helps to prevent damage to the optic nerve and preserve vision. Additionally, it is sometimes prescribed for managing certain types of epilepsy, particularly absence seizures, by stabilizing electrical activity in the brain. Diclofenamide may also be used in metabolic alkalosis to correct electrolyte imbalances by promoting the excretion of bicarbonate through the kidneys. Its diuretic properties make it useful in conditions where fluid retention is a concern.
