Used primarily in the treatment of acid-related gastrointestinal disorders such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcer disease, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It works by reducing gastric acid secretion through inhibition of the H+/K+-ATPase enzyme system in the parietal cells of the stomach. Due to its potent and long-lasting acid suppression, it promotes healing of erosive esophagitis and helps relieve symptoms like heartburn and acid regurgitation. It is also used in combination with antibiotics for eradication of Helicobacter pylori, a major cause of duodenal and gastric ulcers. Its favorable pharmacokinetic profile allows for once-daily dosing, improving patient compliance.
