Used in the treatment of malaria, particularly for the radical cure of Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium ovale infections by targeting the dormant liver stages (hypnozoites) to prevent relapse. It is also employed as a prophylactic agent in specific populations to block transmission of Plasmodium falciparum. Requires testing for G6PD deficiency prior to use due to risk of hemolytic anemia. Commonly used in elimination campaigns and in combination with other antimalarials for complete clearance of the parasite from the body.
