Used primarily in the treatment of Tourette's syndrome to reduce the frequency and severity of tics. Also prescribed for chronic schizophrenia, especially in cases where patients do not respond well to other antipsychotics. Acts as a long-acting dopamine antagonist, helping to stabilize mood and reduce psychotic symptoms. Occasionally used off-label for treatment-resistant delusions or obsessive-compulsive disorders. Due to its long half-life, it allows for less frequent dosing, which can improve patient compliance. Requires careful monitoring because of potential cardiac side effects, particularly QT prolongation.
