Used primarily in the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), especially in patients who are resistant to or have relapsed after all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) therapy. It functions as a selective retinoic acid receptor alpha (RARα) agonist, promoting differentiation of immature leukemic cells into mature granulocytes. Its selectivity may reduce cross-resistance issues seen with other retinoids. Investigated for potential use in other cancers and dermatological conditions due to its role in cell differentiation and proliferation control. Currently approved in Japan for relapsed or refractory APL.
