Used as a hypoxia-activated prodrug in cancer therapy, particularly effective in targeting oxygen-deficient (hypoxic) regions of solid tumors that are often resistant to conventional radiation and chemotherapy. It selectively undergoes enzymatic reduction under low oxygen conditions to produce cytotoxic radicals that cause DNA strand breaks and tumor cell death. Investigated in clinical trials in combination with radiotherapy and cisplatin for treating head and neck, lung, and cervical cancers.
