It works by blocking the interaction between CXCR4 and SDF-1, a mechanism that releases stem cells into the peripheral blood. This enables more efficient stem cell collection, especially in patients who are poor mobilizers with standard growth factor treatments. Plerixafor is typically administered in combination with granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) to enhance stem cell yield for transplantation.
