Used primarily for the treatment of insomnia, particularly in patients who have difficulty falling asleep. It works by targeting the sleep-wake cycle through selective agonism of melatonin receptors in the brain, specifically MT1 and MT2. Unlike traditional sedative-hypnotics, it is not a controlled substance due to low potential for abuse or dependence. Commonly prescribed for long-term management of sleep onset issues, especially in older adults or those with a history of substance misuse. Also considered in patients where benzodiazepines or non-benzodiazepine hypnotics are not recommended.
