Used primarily to treat malignant hyperthermia, a life-threatening condition triggered by certain anesthetics that causes rapid rise in body temperature and muscle rigidity. It works by preventing excessive calcium release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum in muscle cells, thereby reducing muscle contraction and heat production. Administered intravenously during acute episodes, it is the only specific treatment for this condition. Also used orally in some cases to manage chronic muscle spasticity due to neurological disorders such as spinal cord injury or cerebral palsy. Its role is limited by potential hepatotoxicity with long-term use.
