Used as a photosensitizer in photodynamic therapy for cancer treatment due to its ability to generate singlet oxygen upon light irradiation. Also employed in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and dye-sensitized solar cells for its excellent photophysical properties. Serves as a catalyst in certain oxidation reactions and as a luminescent probe in biological imaging because of its strong phosphorescence and cell permeability.
