description Product Description
Samarium ingot is primarily used in the production of samarium-cobalt (SmCo) magnets, which are high-performance permanent magnets known for their exceptional thermal stability and resistance to demagnetization. These magnets are critical in aerospace, military, and defense applications where performance under extreme temperatures is required. They are also used in high-end electric motors, sensors, and precision-guided systems.
Samarium is used in nuclear reactors as a neutron absorber, particularly in control rods, due to its high neutron capture cross-section. This helps regulate the fission process and ensures safe reactor operation.
In medicine, samarium-153, a radioactive isotope derived from samarium, is used in cancer treatment, especially for relieving pain from bone metastases. The compound samarium-153-EDTMP is administered intravenously and targets bone tissue, delivering localized radiation.
Samarium is also used in catalysts for organic synthesis and in the glass and ceramics industry to absorb infrared radiation and improve material performance under high heat. Additionally, it finds use in doping calcium fluoride and calcium tungstate in laser applications.
