Used primarily in pyrophoric applications such as lighter flints, where it produces sparks when struck. Commonly added to magnesium and aluminum alloys to improve strength and creep resistance at high temperatures. Employed in the production of nodular cast iron to enhance graphite spheroidization and mechanical properties. Acts as a deoxidizer and desulfurizer in steelmaking. Also utilized in rare earth magnets and hydrogen storage alloys due to its cerium and lanthanum content.
