Pelitinib is used primarily in cancer research, particularly as a tyrosine kinase inhibitor targeting the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). It shows potential in inhibiting the growth of tumor cells that overexpress EGFR, which is commonly seen in certain types of lung, breast, and colorectal cancers. Due to its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, pelitinib has been investigated for treating brain metastases associated with non-small cell lung cancer. It is also explored for overcoming resistance to other EGFR inhibitors by targeting specific mutant forms of the receptor.
