Used primarily in the leather tanning industry to convert raw animal hides into durable, stable leather. The chromium(III) ions cross-link collagen fibers, improving heat resistance and durability. Also employed as a mordant in textile dyeing to help fix dyes onto fabrics. Serves as a precursor in the production of other chromium compounds and in catalyst systems. Occasionally used in wood preservation and in some industrial coatings for corrosion resistance.
