Used as an intermediate in the synthesis of X-ray contrast agents due to its high iodine content, which enhances radiopacity. Its structure allows for further chemical modifications to produce water-soluble contrast media used in diagnostic imaging such as CT scans and angiography. Also investigated for use in antiseptic formulations owing to the biocidal properties of iodine-releasing compounds.
