Used primarily as an intermediate in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, especially in the production of antiprotozoal and antimicrobial agents. It serves as a building block for drugs targeting anaerobic bacteria and certain parasites, such as those causing trichomoniasis and amoebiasis. Its nitro group and imidazole ring structure make it suitable for further chemical modifications to enhance biological activity. Also investigated for use in the development of new nitroimidazole-based therapeutics with improved efficacy and reduced side effects.
