Fluthiacet-methyl is used as a herbicide in agricultural settings, primarily for the control of broadleaf weeds and some grass weeds in crops such as corn and sorghum. It is applied pre-plant or pre-emergence and works by inhibiting acetolactate synthase (ALS), an enzyme essential for amino acid synthesis in plants. This action leads to the cessation of cell division and growth in susceptible weeds, resulting in their death. Due to its low application rate and high potency, it is effective even at low use rates. It degrades relatively quickly in soil, reducing the risk of carryover to subsequent sensitive crops. Its selectivity allows for use in specific crops without causing significant injury when applied according to label directions.
