Used as a fluorescent probe in analytical chemistry to detect metal ions, particularly aluminum and zinc, due to its strong emission response upon binding. Also employed in the study of DNA interactions and as a sensitizer in certain luminescent materials. Its rigid, planar structure makes it suitable for applications in organic semiconductors and photovoltaic devices. Additionally, bianthronyl derivatives are investigated for use in OLEDs and as dyes in specialty pigments.
